Ozzi Kleen Sewage Treatment System

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system is the only 100% aerobic home sewage treatment system allowing you to recycle your waste water and use it for irrigation.

A home sewage treatment system can also be referred to as a home sewage treatment plant (HSTP), waste water treatment system, sewage treatment unit (STU), aerated treatment unit (ATU), aerated waste water treatment system (AWTS), on-site sewage management system (OSMS) or on-site sewage facilities (OSSF). This website will refer to all of the above as a sewage treatment system.

Types of Waste Water Systems

There are two types of sewage treatment processes; (1) Aerobic (or non-septic) and (2) Anaerobic (or septic). Aerobic treatment is a process that uses air or oxygen to help bacteria degrade waste water and other pollutants. Anaerobic treatment is a process where waste water is broken down by micro-organisms without the aid of dissolved oxygen.

The principle behind the aerobic treatment process is simple. By keeping the organic waste matter oxygenated, the naturally occurring bacteria are kept alive. These bacteria, called aerobic bacteria, are very aggressive in feeding on waste, making the treatment process highly effective and efficient. This allows breakdown to occur in a matter of hours.

In the anaerobic treatment process the bacteria present, called anaerobic bacteria, have to break down waste in the absence of oxygen. This process relies on the slow decay of organic matter into smaller digestible constituents and can take up to 3 months to complete.

Anaerobic bacteria are not only less active than aerobic bacteria, they are far more fragile. Inorganic compounds, such as soaps, household cleaners and disinfectants that are commonly used in the home can quickly upset the bacteria, resulting in poor treatment performance.

How does an Ozzi Kleen Sewage Treatment System Work?

The Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system uses activated sludge in what is known as the IDEA process. IDEA or Intermittently Decanted Extended Aeration process treats sewage through cyclic periods of extended aeration, settling and removal of clean effluent via a decanter (see Diagram 1). Most modern town and industrial sewage treatment plants in Australia and around the world utilise some form of aerobic treatment. The patented Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system is the only residential sewage treatment system available on the market that is 100% aerobic1.

1. Raw Water

Household waste water from toilets, bathrooms, kitchens and laundries enter the single tank treatment system.

2. 100% Aeration Cycle

The raw water enters the single tank where it is oxygenated via an aerator. This keeps the naturally occurring aerobic bacteria found in the sewage alive, which in turn actively feeds and rapidly breaks down the waste. This aerobic environment is provided for micro-organisms which oxidise the organic waste while a balance between the air feed and the organic/hydraulic load is maintained. There is no anaerobic or septic process involved with an Ozzi Kleen sewage treatment system.

3. Settling Cycle

After the aeration cycle has been completed there is a short period where aeration ceases to allow solids to settle. This results in a layer of clear water (effluent) at the top of the aeration tank ready for decanting.

4. Clear Effluent Ready for Irrigating

Once the settling period has elapsed, the decanter draws off the clear effluent and passes it through a chlorinator prior to storage in the effluent tank to ensure disinfection of pathogenic organisms. The effluent pump will then pump out disinfected effluent for recycling to your irrigation area.

4 easy steps to installing a new sewage treatment system or completing a septic upgrade

The trusted name in Sewage Treatment Systems

The Ozzi Kleen story began in 1983, when the first sewage treatment system started being tested in the back yard of the founder and owner, Mal Close. Mal had been working in the sewage treatment industry for 28 years and had become frustrated using a septic system on his non-sewerage acreage block. Mal’s dream was to develop a residential sewage treatment system where he could reuse the water to irrigate his beloved garden, where there were no septic odours, no septic pump outs required, a system that was safe, yet reliable, cost effective and which was easy to install and maintain.

It took 10 years of testing before Mal was happy with the end result. During this time a number of Mal’s friends began asking if they could purchase a system.

From humble beginnings it didn’t take long for the Ozzi Kleen system to gain a reputation as a trusted, reliable and effective system. Today, the Ozzi Kleen team couldn’t be more proud of the products they produce. You can find out more about Ozzi Kleen by visiting their website – www.ozzikleen.com
